What Claude Is — And Why It Thinks Differently

Copilot is great when you're already inside a document or an email. But sometimes you need to think something through from scratch — and that's where Claude comes in.

Each lesson is structured to explain the concept, show a real use case, and prompt action immediately.

Immediate use

  • Go to claude.ai and create a free account if you don't already have one. Don't do anything yet — just get in. Look around. Notice that it looks like a chat window, not a word processor. That's the whole point. In Module 3, you'll learn exactly how to talk to it.

Module 1: You're Already Paying for AI — Here's What That Means

This lesson is designed to be tested in the live tool while you read rather than studied abstractly.

Two tools side-by-side shown as physical metaphors: a Swiss Army knife (Copilot, built into things) and a notebook with a thoughtful pen sketch (Claude, for thinking things through). Clean editorial flat-lay, warm neutral background.
Lesson Walkthrough

Claude is a separate AI tool made by a company called Anthropic. You access it at claude.ai in your browser, or through the mobile app. It's not built into Microsoft — it stands on its own.

The way to think about the difference: Copilot is like an assistant who works inside your office and knows where everything is. Claude is like a really smart advisor you can call up and talk through a problem with — even when you don't have a document in front of you.

You can use Claude to think through a decision, write something from scratch, get feedback on a proposal, prepare for a hard conversation, or ask 'what am I missing here?' It's designed to have a real back-and-forth conversation with you — not just spit out an answer.

You'll use both tools in this course. They do different things, and once you know which is which, you'll naturally reach for the right one.

Term To Know

Claude / Large Language Model (LLM)

Claude is an AI made by Anthropic that you talk to in plain language. It's called a 'large language model' because it was trained on an enormous amount of text and learned how to respond in a way that sounds — and often is — genuinely helpful. You don't need to remember that term. Just remember: Claude is a thinking partner, not a search engine.

Key Takeaway

Keep this in mind

Claude is a separate AI tool you talk to like a person — best for thinking things through, writing from scratch, or getting a second opinion.
