AI in movies either wants to save the world or destroy it. AI in your business just wants to answer the phone.
The AI systems available to small businesses today are specialized. They're trained to do one thing (or a few related things) very well. They're not general-purpose robots with opinions. They're more like a really capable, really reliable tool.
Think of a calculator. It doesn't 'know' math — it just processes numbers very fast and gives you an answer. AI works on a similar principle, but for language. It has processed enormous amounts of text and learned the patterns of how people talk, ask questions, and respond.
That's it. When you ask it something, it uses those patterns to give you a relevant, useful answer. It doesn't 'think.' It predicts. And it's gotten remarkably good at it.
For your business, this matters because it means AI can understand what your customers are asking — even when they use different words, have an accent, or ask in an unusual way.
Think about this: Have you ever used Siri, Google Assistant, or the chat feature on a company's website? If so, you've already interacted with AI. It wasn't dramatic — it was just useful (or tried to be).
In case you hear this term out there...
Large Language Model (LLM) — The type of AI behind most voice and chat assistants. 'Large' refers to the amount of text it was trained on. 'Language Model' means it understands and generates human language. You'll hear this term often — now you know what it means.
✦ AI isn't a robot with plans. It's a specialized tool trained to understand language and respond helpfully. That's what makes it useful for customer conversations.
