Bernadette Smail
Founder & Principal Consultant
AI Strategy & Intelligent Automation
Bernadette founded SYSTEMshift to help organizations modernize with clarity and structure — not hype.
Before launching SYSTEMshift, she contributed to large-scale transformation initiatives across enterprise and regulated environments, including global technology companies and major financial institutions. Her work spans UX research, service design, AI product strategy, and cross-functional delivery in complex governance settings.
Her career uniquely combines deep technical understanding with strategic systems thinking. With a background in software development, she understands not only how digital products should be designed but also how AI systems and platforms are actually built and implemented.
Earlier in her career, Bernadette spent seven years as an IBM UX Consultant and UX Researcher, where she worked on the ideation and development of Watson AI use cases. During this time, she collaborated with teams across multiple industries—including airlines, banking, and the Canadian government—to explore practical applications of artificial intelligence and design user-centered AI solutions.
She later served as Senior Manager, Service Design at TD Bank, contributing to complex digital service initiatives within one of North America’s largest financial institutions.
Today, through SYSTEMshift, Bernadette works directly with organizations to move from AI experimentation to practical, operational implementation — designing AI agents, workflow automation systems, and AI-enabled services that deliver measurable value.
Based in Toronto, she supports organizations across the GTA and beyond.
